Belgium

A few facts

Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a federal monarchy in Western Europe. It is a founding member of the European Union and hosts the EU's headquarters as well as those of several other major international organizations such as NATO. Belgium covers an area of 30,528 square kilometers and has a population of about 11 million people.

Together with Luxembourg and the Netherlands, Belgium is part of the trilateral economic, cultural and geographic union called Benelux.

Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups, the Dutch-speakers (about 59%), mostly Flemish, in the Northern Flanders and the French-speakers (about 41%), mostly Walloons, in Southern Wallonia, in addition to a small group of German-speakers, in Eastern Wallonia. The Brussels-Capital Region, officially bilingual, is a mostly French-speaking enclave within the Flemish Region.

In 2011 the foreign population of Belgium amounted to 1,170,000 persons or 10.6% of the country’s total population. By country of birth the foreign-born comprise 15% of the total population. Since 2008 Morocco has been the main country of origin of immigrants, followed by France, The Netherlands and Italy.
